Master Class with IRATXE ANSA
March 1-2, 2013

“Iratxe Ansa will be coming from Spain to NCDC to teach a master class and to set choreography for Synthesis 2013. Born in San Sebastian, Spain, Iratxe Ansa graduated from the Conservatorio Superior de Musica in San Sebastian, continuing her studies and graduating from the John Cranko Schule in Stuttgart. Since 1993 Iratxe has been dancing with companies such as Basel Ballet, Ballet Gulbelkian, Compania Nacional de la Danza with Nacho Duato, Lyon Opera Ballet under Yorgos Loukos and most recently with Nederlands Dance Theatre under the direction of Anders Hellstrom. Throughout her career, Ansa has worked with choreographers like Nacho Duato, William Forsythe, Jiri Kylian, Medhi Walerski, Johan Inger, Ohad Naharin, Mats Ek, Nils Christe, Patrick de Bana, among others. Ansa's repertory includes Youri Vamos' Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Carmina Burana, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Julien Sorel, Ohad Naharin's Axioma 7, Hans Van Manen's Vision Fuggitives, Nacho Duato's Rassamblement, Duende, Without Words, Gavines y Dragones, Cero Sobre Cero, William Forsythe's Artifact, Enemy, Second Detail, Kylian's Sinfonia de los Salmos, Petit Mort, Mats Ek's Fluke, Carmen, among others. She has created roles in Nacho Duato's White Darkness, Txalaparta, Multiplicidad formas del silencio y vacio, Romeo and Juliet, in Niels Christe's Pulcinella, Mathilde Monnier's Slide, Crystal Pite's Frontier and The Second Person. In 2002 she won both the Public's Choice Prize and Prize for Best Dancer at the Internationales Solo Tanz Theater Festival in Germany, in the same year winning in the Benoit de la Danse under Nacho Duato. In 2005 Ansa won a residency for her performance in the Certamen Coreografico de Madrid and in 2007 was awarded the prize for Artistic Trajectory in the Association of Dance Professionals of Spain. Ansa has performed in many galas including the Gala Teatro Real in Madrid, Dance for Life in Brussels (presenting her own choreography Bisitza), Tel Aviv Gala presenting works by Nacho Duato and William Forsythe, among many others. As a choreographer, Iratxe Ansa has staged her own work and created pieces for Lyon Opera Ballet and other companies alike in the United States and Europe. Upon leaving Nederlands Danse Theatre in 2009, Iratxe has been a freelance dance artist and teacher creating workshops in Europe and the United States, choreographing for various companies and working on her own performance projects, the most recent to be performed in the Matadero in Madrid, Spain in November of 2012.”

$80 for entire workshop.Formerly a member of the San Francisco Ballet and Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet, Alex retired from dancing full-time in 1998 to co-found The Foundry as a vehicle through which to more deeply explore his interests in choreography, improvisation, mixed media work, and collaborative process.

Backhaus Dance Workshop

On April 12-13, 2008, NCDC welcomed Jenny Backhaus and dancers from her company, Backhaus Dance. Company members taught a master class on Saturday and performed at the NCDC Black Box Theater on Sunday.

Mia Michaels Master Class
On April 8, 2008, NCDC hosted a master class taught by the inimitable Mia Michaels. Students from all over the Sacramento area converged on NCDC to glean as much as they could from Ms. Michaels.
